Italy is full of beauty waiting to be discovered from behind the wheel. Vitor Italy Tours designs custom self-drive tours that combine the freedom of driving your own route with a fully planned itinerary, handpicked accommodations, and 24/7 support throughout the trip.
A self-drive tour is a way to experience Italy at your own pace: stopping wherever and whenever you want, to discover hidden villages, waterfalls, valleys, and quiet beaches away from the main tourist routes.
Italy behind the wheel, in full liberty
Italy is a mosaic of micro-cultures, each with its own farmers, bakers, artisans, and winemakers, often changing from one valley or coastline to the next. Driving through Italy means getting to know its most authentic side, off the tourist routes: small family-run taverns serving food grown just meters from the kitchen, cheesemakers who still stir their curd by hand using traditional wooden paddles, and vineyards where grapes are harvested the old way, one bunch at a time.
It also means the freedom to choose how you experience each stop: staying in a restored countryside farmhouse surrounded by olive groves, a historic castle overlooking a medieval town, or a small guesthouse run by a local family for generations. Every region tells its own story through its food, its architecture, and the people who still work the land the way their grandparents did — and a self-drive tour is one of the few ways to experience all of it firsthand, at your own pace.
In short, a road trip in Italy is freedom and beauty.
Experiencing the authentic Italian atmosphere “on the road”
With Vitor Italy Tours’ self-drive tours, travelers experience all of this while enjoying the freedom of the open road. Each self-drive tour is tailored to the traveler’s individual requirements, tastes, and preferences. The planning process includes:
Studying the ideal itinerary together with the traveler,
Evaluating distances and timing between each stop,
Selecting accommodations along the route that reflect authentic Italian atmosphere, so travelers can fully experience “la dolce vita”.
We will not just guide you through Italy—we will help you understand it.
We are always with you
You’ll choose how to get to your destination each day: by motorway and state roads, or along provincial roads and scenic “Strade del Vino e dei Sapori” (Wine and Taste Roads), away from tourist crowds, in favor of silence, surprise, and beauty. You may add on experiences that are of most interest to you, including hiking, weekends at sea, bike rides on beautiful nature paths.
As with all VITORITALY Tours, we’ll be available for you 24/7, to allow you to enjoy every stage of the tour in total relax and comfort.

Do I need an International Driving Permit to drive in Italy?
If you hold a driving licence issued outside the EU, you’ll generally need an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside your national licence. We’ll guide you through exactly what’s required based on your nationality when we plan your self-drive tour.
How many days should a self-drive tour in Italy last?
Most of our clients choose between 7 and 14 days, enough time to explore 2-4 regions without rushing. We tailor the length and pace to your interests, whether that’s wine country, coastline, or hidden villages.
Can I book the rental car myself instead of through Vitor?
Yes. You’re welcome to book independently if you prefer. We’ll still design your full itinerary, select accommodations along the route (farmhouses, castles, boutique hotels, luxury resorts), book activities and attractions and remain available 24/7 during your trip.
Is a self-drive tour suitable for first-time visitors to Italy?
Absolutely. We adjust the itinerary to your driving comfort level, choosing quieter routes and manageable daily distances, while still helping you experience Italy’s most authentic, off-the-beaten-path locations.
“We very much appreciated the time you spent with us during the planning stages as well as during the trip, making sure our needs were met and things were going smoothly.”
